Taking Time for Yourself in Port Jefferson

stones1Happy New Year! We’ve all made it through the holiday season intact and have rung in 2012 with the same gusto we do each January. If you’re like me, you love the holidays but find it difficult to grab even five minutes alone to relax! With all of the fun events that happen in Port Jefferson, not to mention the endless holiday parties and various festivities, it can be tough for anyone to sneak in some “me” time the last couple of months of the year.

Now that you’ve taken your holiday decorations down and Port Jefferson is returning to its pre-holiday self, you’re probably thinking about putting some New Year’s resolutions into effect for 2012. Many people head into the New Year full force with high hopes for transforming their lives. While it’s great to have the drive to better yourself, I encourage you to set realistic goals that you’ll feel great reaching. Coming up short on ideas? Here are my suggestions for staying happy and healthy this year and maybe even discovering a new passion.

    1. Get in Shape
According to Yahoo! News, losing weight and getting in shape is the #1 New Year’s resolution among Americans. Why not jump on the bandwagon? Shedding a few pounds can add years to your life and help you avoid major health problems. Whether you’re a beginner or have a special talent, there are plenty of ways to stay active around Port Jefferson. Those looking for something out of the ordinary should try Shine Dance Studio’s Adult Barre Sculpt class to define muscles. pilatesAnother idea to get the results you’re looking for is to train with a personal trainer at Fitness Together on East Main Street. Are you ready to step outside of your comfort zone? Check out a Zumba class with Allison Santana at Remedy. It’ll give you an energy boost like no other, so leave your inhibitions at the door!

    2. Discover a New Passion
The Port Jefferson Free Library offers many programs that allow you to explore a new interest or hone some skills you already have. Learn a foreign language, improve your computer skills, take a writing workshop or learn how to take beautiful pictures in the digital photography program. There’s even a seminar on what to expect when planning a trip to Disney World, a gluten free cooking class and a program on understanding astrology. For dozens more programs for adults, teens and children, visit the Port Jefferson Free Library’s website.

    3. Take an Hour (or Three!) to Relax
If you found that you wound yourself into a ball of stress over the holidays, resolve to allow yourself to relax this year. Start by taking a yoga class at Seva Yoga Studio in Port Jefferson. Look at it as a way to relax your mind and your body. Don’t worry, if you’re afraid to commit long term they do offer drop-in classes. Another option for ultimate relaxation is a trip to The Spa at St. Tropez in Port Jefferson. While it’d certainly be nice to hop on a plane and head to the tropics, The Spa at St. Tropez is the next best thing. With your choice of a five, three or two hour spa day, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve had a week’s vacation.

I hope these ideas have inspired you to take control of your happiness and health in 2012. There are so many other ways to get involved in Port Jefferson, so feel free to call or email me to find out more about the community. By the way, with the spring real estate market approaching, I’d love to help you sell your Port Jefferson home. Just let me know when you’re ready to get started!
